Statistician - Infection in Oxfordshire Research Database
Grade 8: Salary £36,532 - £43,622 per annum
The Infection in Oxfordshire Research Database (IORD) program at the University of Oxford is seeking to appoint an individual with postgraduate expertise in statistics, mathematics or related disciplines, for a full-time, 18 month, fixed term post commencing in February 2010, or as soon as possible thereafter. Funding is provided by a National Institute for Health Research funded Program Development Grant.
The objective of the project is to develop automated surveillance systems providing early warning of emerging microbial pathogens, and of the harm they cause. If successful detection algorithms can be implemented during this 18 month post, a Program Grant application to extend the system is planned.
The Infection in Oxfordshire Research Database is a rich patient-centred data store covering about 1% of England; it includes data on infection, microbial isolation, hospitalisation and illness severity. A component of the Infection Theme of the Oxford Biomedical Research Centre, it has close links with a large UK-Clinical Research Consortium (lead locally by PIs Professors Derrick Crook & Tim Peto) in collaboration with the Health Protection Agency and the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. These links offer both the opportunity to investigate any emerging microbial pathogens detected within this grant, and a diverse and stimulating research environment, in a rapidly growing department with extensive mathematical, statistical, molecular and clinical expertise.
The position will be based at the Nuffield Department of Clinical Medicine (NDM), John Radcliffe Hospital.

Applicants who would need a work visa if appointed to the post are asked to note that under the UK’s new points-based migration system they will need to demonstrate that they have sufficient points.
The closing date for applications is no later than midday on Friday, 15th January 2010. Applications received after this deadline will not be accepted. Interviews are expected to be held late January or early Feb 2010.
