The UK is noted for the quality of the academic research in its universities and medical schools. Many of the recent scientific advances relevant to health care have come from UK research.

Oxford Biomedical Research Centre (OxBRC) is a collaboration between scientific researchers from the University of Oxford and clinical researchers from the Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals NHS Trust. Its aim is to use the ideas emerging from academic research to develop new products and treatments which can provide benefits to patients in Oxford and throughout the NHS.

In bringing together the basic scientific research from the university and the knowledge of clinical need and the problems of health service delivery within the Radcliffe Hospitals NHS Trust, the intention is to more rapidly identify the opportunities for beneficial innovation. This closer collaboration will facilitate the setting up of early clinical trials of new products and treatments. The data from such trials will inform decisions on which ideas should be the focus of further investment by the NHS, the government and UK industry.

To demonstrate the health and economic benefits from its activities, the OxBRC is working with the York Health Economics Consortium (YHEC) from the University of York to show how the benefits of the OxBRC can be defined and demonstrated in a more quantitative way. A key element of this work is the assessment of the health benefits as perceived by patients, not just clinicians and other health professionals.
