PPI Workshop, Oxford 2nd October 2009

PPI leads from biomedical research centres and units across England attended a PPI Workshop in Oxford on 2nd October 2009. The aim of the day was to discuss how the BRCs and BRUs could develop a meaningful and appropriate approach to involving patients and public in translational research.

Speakers included Sir Nick Partridge from INVOLVE, Lester Firkins from the James Lind Alliance, Phillipa Yeeles from UKCRC and Martin Lodemore from the Diabetes Research Network.  Representatives from Oxford BRC, Kings College BRC and Nottingham BRU also gave talks outlining their PPI experiences so far. Discussions in the afternoon gave the participants an opportunity to reflect on their own PPI experiences and to discuss ways in which the group could facilitate and improve patient and public involvement in the translational research arena.

As a result of these discussions, resources, such as a shared site on the NIHR portal, are being developed which will provide a platform in which PPI leads can share ideas, examples of best practice, and information. Alongside plans for future group meetings it is hoped that a joint BRC/BRU strategy will be developed that will support patient and public involvement in all stages of the translational research process.
