Cancer Theme
Oxford Cancer Centre
The Cancer Theme aims to improve the specificity of cancer treatment and will:
1. Deliver targeted treatments and treatment combinations developed through the concept of synthetic lethality and/or oncogenic vulnerability. To do this we will establish screens for synthetically lethal interactions and conduct trials to validate the hits generated.
2. Develop the means for treatment selection and stratification based on high throughput genotyping and next generation sequencing, with the Genomic Medicine Theme. In doing so we will establish the capability in the NHS to evaluate tens to hundreds of genes in tumours, and apply the results directly to clinical care.
3. Use early phase cancer trials unit to support the clinical assessment of focused treatments. We will foster collaboration through multi-centre recruitment. This will accelerate trial recruitment and provide the fastest route to changing clinical practice in the NHS, for the benefit of patients with cancer.
The theme is grouped into five sub-themes, which all link closely with one another:
