OCDEM Clinical Research Unit
The Clinical Research Unit (CRU) is the hub of activity for translational research within the Oxford Centre for Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism, (OCDEM). Resources in the unit include 8 beds with facilities for overnight stays, a DEXA scanner, and a fully resourced laboratory. We also have a fully equipped room to support metabolism studies including ultrasound, use of stable isotope and other equipment facilitating the measurement of a wide range of metabolic profiles.
The CRU led by a Clinical Director, Professor Fredrik Karpe and staffed by a full time manager, 5 full time and 2 part time research nurses. Currently a total of 23 studies are registered with the unit which cover a wide spectrum of research areas across diabetes, endocrinology and lipid metabolism.
The unit provides support to both academic and commercially based studies and provides a safe and comfortable patient environment with a high level of experience and support for the researcher.
Research in the Clinical Research Unit
The Clinical Research Unit (CRU) provides a centre where clinical and physiological investigations can be carried out. It is run to Good Clinical Practice (GCP) standards and has an established record of high quality support for a wide range of studies. The unit has maintained high recruitment levels and low withdrawal rates and ensures that studies are run to the highest standards. The aims of the unit are to meet the needs of the researcher while ensuring that individual volunteers receive the best possible care.
The nursing team provides expertise to carry out study procedures by following Standard Operating Procedures, which can be used and adapted for individual studies and guarantees consistency of method across studies. Where appropriate, nursing staff may be able to provide 24-hour cover and domiciliary visits.

Taking part in Research Studies
If you would like to take part in research, the CRU maintains the OCDEM Research Recruitment Register. If interested, please read the information leaflet and sign and return the permission to contact form. We would then contact you if a study came up for which you were eligible and you would be free to volunteer should you so choose. Of course, should you no longer wish to receive such information let us know and your details will be destroyed.
