Translational Research Group

Professors Rury Holman and Stephen Gough established the Translational Research Group (TRG) in February 2010 in recognition of the urgent need to facilitate scientifically robust and clinically appropriate early intervention of potential new diabetes-related therapies, devices and interventions. It is embedded as a section within the Diabetes Trials Unit (DTU) that can provide substantial infrastructure support, particularly with respect to bioinformatics, biostatistics and regulatory matters.

The TRG undertakes high quality, academic-led Phase I/II trials of novel therapeutic agents and devices. Clinical activity is conducted primarily in the purpose-designed OCDEM Clinical Research Unit (CRU) facility and in collaboration with other sites as recruitment needs dictate.

Interventions and devices for evaluation are selected according to their relevance to the TRG's main areas of clinical and academic interest (beta cell function, cardiodiabetes and metabolism), their feasibility and their potential to make a significant impact on patient care or disease prevention.
