Dr James Kennedy is the clinical and academic lead for acute stroke. American Stroke Association New Investigator Award for his acute stroke research. He is Co-PI on MRC Acute Stroke Partnership Grant with collaborators at the other 4 current Comprehensive BRCs.
Dr Rajesh Kharbanda is second theme co-leader and co-ordinator of the Interventional Research Group. Consultant Interventional Cardiologist with international research programme on cardiac protection and myocardial infarction. UK lead and scientific officer for Leducq Transatlantic Network Group.
Key Researchers
Prof. Keith Channon is the Oxford BRC Director, and an Interventional Cardiologist. He heads an internationally leading basic and clinical research programme on coronary plaque biology and endothelial dysfunction, translating experimental findings into clinical practice.
Prof. Alastair Buchan, NIHR Senior Investigator, is Professor of Stroke Medicine, the Head of the Medical Sciences Division at the University of Oxford, and former Director for the Oxford BRC. His research focus is the translation of his experimental neuroprotection programme to clinical practice.
Dr Adrian Banning is an Interventional Cardiologist and Divisional Director for Cardiac, Thoracic and Vascular. A leading investigator in studies of stents vs. coronary bypass surgery and of drug eluting stents. Leader of research utilizing MRI to investigate mechanisms of injury during revascularization.
Dr Robin Choudhury is a Wellcome Trust Senior Research Fellow in Clinical Science; Clinical Director of the Acute Vascular Imaging Centre (AVIC) and interventional cardiologist. He is co-founder of Oxford Contrast Molecular Diagnostics, a spin out company to develop molecular imaging contrast agents.
Prof. Peter Jezzard is a Chair of Neuroimaging and an internationally recognized MRI physicist working on the development of novel neuroimaging methods. He heads the University’s Imaging Management Board and is incoming President of the International Society of MR in Medicine.
Dr Bernard Prendergast is Clinical Director of Cardiology and an international opinion leader in VHD. He was a principal contributor to European Guidelines on the management of VHD, infective endocarditis and atrial fibrillation, is Chairman-Elect of the ESC Working Group on VHD and an expert adviser to NICE.
Prof. Hugh Watkins, NIHR Senior Investigator is Head of the academic Department of Cardiovascular Medicine and an international authority on ICC. Provides important cross-links as leader of Genomic Medicine Theme. Nationally, has led implementation of genetic testing for SCD in the NHS.
