A further dimension of deep-sequencing is translating it into the diagnostic arena. This is being developed; the relevant investigations are being conducted in collaboration with the Imaging Theme. A further diagnostic dimension is translation of a new method for multiplexing up to 30 diagnostic PCRs in a single multiplex reaction. The approach named Mass Tag Multiplex PCR enables detection of amplicons by mass spectroscopy. This mainly UK developed technology is likely to provide greatly strengthened diagnostic capability based on molecular methods in the future. This work has attracted substantial funding from the Health Technology Assessment (HTA) and is called the Mass Code Project.
