Stroke Research Theme
The Stroke theme’s aim is to promote research which will improve prevention and reduce the burden of stroke.
Although stroke is the most common cause of adult disability in the UK and is now the most common cause of premature death worldwide, research on causes, prevention and treatment has previously been very limited. The development of the Stroke theme of the Oxford BRC has therefore added substantially to the UK’s stroke research capacity, with 12 new researchers appointed. Their research includes studies aimed at improving prevention of stroke, increasing the effectiveness of acute treatment, and developing new treatments to increase recovery after stroke. We are also studying the long-term non-physical complications of stroke, such as post-stroke fatigue and memory loss, which are often of more concern to sufferers than the more obvious physical disabilities caused by stroke. The results of our research have already been incorporated in the recent reports of the UK National Stroke Strategy and the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE).
There are three subthemes within the Stroke Theme:
Acute StrokeStroke Prevention
Stroke Recovery
