TB
The university’s MVA85A TB vaccine was partnered with the vaccine company Emergent Biosolutions to form a joint venture company “Oxford Emergent Tuberculosis Consortium” that will support phase II and III efficacy trials of this vaccine in Africa. In Oxford three phase I trials are in progress. One is assessing the safety and immunogenicity of MVA85A in HIV infected individuals. We find that MVA85A appears safe and immunogenic in HIV infected people. The second seeks to assess whether MVA85A immunisation diminishes the growth of BCG administered subsequently: a potential model of tuberculosis challenge. The third is assessing a different viral vector, fowlpox, to deliver antigen 85A. We find that this new TB vaccine, FP85A, is not immunogenic in humans, in marked contrast to MVA85A.
