Meningococcal vaccines

A study of persistence of immunity in childhood to serogroup C meningococcal vaccine (the Hib-MenC study) recruited 250 children aged 6-12 years and showed that children immunised in infancy or early childhood without a booster in the MenC catch up campaign in 1999 no longer had protection against this disease whereas children over 10 years of age remain protected. Data analysis is ongoing but some key preliminary data from the study has been presented at IDSA/ICAAC 2008 and is to be published in a review in Nature Reviews of Immunology 2009, indicating the potential role for an adolescent booster of MenC vaccine.
